Are Hollow Icons Really Harder to Recognize Than Solid Icons?

Finally, I hope that this study highlights the importance of using real evidence to back up UI design decisions. Designers of all types need to think critically about best practices and back up their recommendations with solid (pun not intended, but embraced) research.“Are Hollow Icons Really Harder to Recognize Than Solid Icons? The entire piece is well worth a read. Try taking the quiz too (if you can—it errored out three times on me, never got my results).

In my experience, all too often designers just “feel” their design without thinking about it. They don’t spend much time beyond “this looks pretty.” Design is more than looks, especially when it comes to interactive design—which at times feels more like science than art. Interactive designers must be equipped with an inquisitive, analytical mind. If we’re not backing up our decisions with careful consideration and research, we’re wasting everyone’s time.
