I haven’t had paid vacation in a few years. It’s not that great. I haven’t even taken an unpaid vacation that was more than three days in the same amount of time. It wears on you after a while. Every day you’re not at work you’re losing money. But mentally — and often physically — you need the break. ATP had a good discussion about a related issue this week: overworking programmers really doesn’t make for a better product in the end. Nor happy programmers. Not having paid vacation is in the same vein. It’s unsustainable in the long run.
